The Toastmaster is a typically British institution founded in the middle ages. Old ale was once so foul-smelling that to make it palatable, toast, infused with herbs, was floated on the surface by the master of the toast and his perk was to eat it at the end of the day.

The traditional red coat was introduced by the Twelfth Earl of Derby (who instituted the Derby horse race in 1780) when, to make a banquet more grand, he dressed the butler in his own riding coat.
